Remove MDM and Factory Reset a Mac

This document will instruct on how to remove an Apple from Jamf (or any MDM) and factory reset it so it is unmanaged. This is useful when decommissioning devices and wiping data and any form of information that could compromise security.

Go to: Jamf > Computers > Find the Mac > Management > Select Remove MDM Profile

Log on to the Mac (Administrator Account) > System Preferences > Delete the MDM Profile > Shutdown

Then go to: Jamf > PreStage Enrollments > DEP Enrollments > Scope

Deselect the Mac you want to remove (I find it best to leave it in the scope but deselected for auditing)

Go to: Apple School / Business Manager > Devices > Find Mac > Release Device

(This will remove any trace from the MDM Management and won’t prompt for Remote Management)

Now: Start the Mac and press Command + R (Release when the Apple Logo appears)

macOS Utilities will Start

Go to: Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD – Data > Delete APFS volume

When prompted Click Delete – DO NOT CLICK Delete Volume Group

Then: Disk Utility > Select Macintosh HD > Unmount

(If you can’t unmount the disk – Select + Volume > Select APFS – this will create a temporary volume allow you to unmount the Macintosh HD disk)

Once the disk is unmounted > Select Erase > Delete the newly created volume (if applicable)

Once the disk is erased > Quit Disk Utility

If you want to reinstate the operating system.

Go to: Reinstalling macOS > Follow on-screen prompts > Wait

Once the new OS has been installed the device will restart and go to the welcome screen
